Ethereal Materiality
This is a collaborative sculptural installation that I designed and constructed with Bobby Magee Lopez for his Denver gallery, Innerspace, in the spring of 2013. The theme of Ethereal Materiality is "Vibrations." If you examine solid matter on a microscopic level, you find that it's made up of particles rapidly vibrating around mostly empty space. Emulating this, the wooden towers of Ethereal Materiality appear solid from above, but when viewed from the side, are revealed to be made up of mostly empty space and held together by an invisible structure (clear acrylic rods and tubes). Heavy, wooden rods are hung from the ceiling and hover and sway slightly just above the ground to make the airflow and audible vibrations in the room visible.
Above the tallest central tower hangs a clear acrylic tetrahedron, the sacred polygon that represents air, with this quote by Bobby laser cut into each face:
"Breath creates life with vibrations by sending ripples through time and space."
Moreover, the layout of the piece and the form of the towers are derived from the golden ratio, a geometric pattern found ubiquitously in nature. Also known as "phi," it is considered sacred geometry as one of the underlying, mathematical codes for physical reality.
